Dr. Joseph Matthews education includes:


  • BS in life sciences from Kansas State University
  • MS in Foods and Nutrition from Kansas State University
  • DDS from the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Dentistry
  • Post-doctoral MSc in Evidence-based Health Care from Oxford University, UK
  • Post-doctoral residency orofacial pain and dysfunction at UCLA


His practice experience includes dentist in the United States Navy, community dentist in rural Kansas and the Community Health Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was in private practice in Los Alamos, New Mexico in general dentistry and orofacial pain for 23 years. He also practiced orofacial pain in Tempe, Arizona and Tucson, Arizona before settling in Stone Mountain, Georgia in 2022.

Dr. Matthews has numerous professional publications and has given presentations on orofacial pain diagnosis and management, dental management of obstructive sleep apnea, x-ray diagnosis in orofacial pain, oral cancer screening methods, and critical appraisal of research literature. He lectures both domestically and internationally. He served as adjunct faculty at UCLA department of orofacial pain and in the general dental practice residency at the University of New Mexico. He was also consultant to the Council of Scientific Affairs of the American Dental Association and is past-president of the New Mexico Dental Association. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International and a Fellow of the International College of Dentists.


Dr. Matthews is a diplomate of the Board of Orofacial Pain and Fellow of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain. He is also a member of the American Academy of Oral Medicine, The American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, the American Dental Association, and the American Headache Society.



His leisure pursuits include canoeing, mountain biking, hiking, and spending time with his family.
